Somaliland Foreign Minister Essa Kayd rebukes China's apparent attempts to dictate the unrecognized breakaway state's foreign relations with Taiwan and reaffirms the state's recognition of the Republic of China.
The United States and Japan approve a plan for a joint military operation in response to a possible "Taiwan emergency". The operation would consist of deploying U.S. Marines on the Ryukyu Islands near Taiwan, while the Japan Self-Defense Forces would provide logistical support such as ammunition and fuel supplies.
Taiwan announces it will mutually establish representative offices with the unrecognized breakaway state of Somaliland. While relations are not diplomatic at this point, further establishment of diplomatic relations would make Taiwan the first sovereign state to recognize Somaliland and the first new diplomatic ally that Taiwan has gained in 13 years.
China and the United States officially resume military ties after a 10-month break following US arms sales to Taiwan, with the two countries emphasizing the importance of a close military dialogue. The two countries will also confer on maritime issues next month.
