An unidentified source says a North Korean 5,500-ton freighter named "Chongbong", which is on the U.N. Security Council blacklist, sinks with 6,500 tons of iron off the coast of Shimane Prefecture in western Japan. All 21 crew members on board are rescued by a North Korean oil ship passing nearby.
South Korea warns North Korea of "searing consequences" if it doesn't abandon plans to launch a long-range rocket that violates United Nations Security Council resolutions that prohibits the country from engaging in any ballistic activities.
North Korea shells Yeonpyeong island, South Korea at 14:34 local time in response to South Korean shelling close to the North Korean border during military drills. The North's shelling kills two marines and prompts a military response by the South in one of the most serious clashes since the 1953 armistice of the Korean War.
