Police in Fiji carry out a crackdown on opposition politicians and human rights activists who are opposed to a newly proposed land bill and who criticized the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Among those arrested are opposition politicians Biman Prasad, Lynda Tabuya and Litia Qionibaravi as well as former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
Fiji reports a record 83 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, thereby bringing the national total of confirmed cases to 604. The Ministry of Health seals off the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva for COVID-19 patients only as 11 of the cases are of unconfirmed origin.
Cyclones Yasa and Zazu threaten several Pacific countries, especially Fiji. Yasa intensifies into a category 2 storm, remaining in the waters between Fiji and Vanuatu. It is expected to reach Fiji on Thursday as a category 4 storm. Zazu also brings heavy rains to Tonga.
The government of Tonga reveals a proposal to trade the disputed Minerva Reefs to Fiji in exchange for the Lau Islands, in an effort to settle a decades old territorial dispute between the two Pacific countries.
