Japan detects a new case of what is believed to be a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza at a poultry farm in Fukuoka Prefecture. Japan's Kagawa Prefecture will cull 850,000 chickens at two poultry farms after the country reported its first bird flu outbreak in more than two years. It will be the sixth and seventh cases of avian flu in the prefecture and the biggest culling to be done at once.
The wreck of Japanese warship "Kaga", sunk in the Battle of Midway during World War II, is discovered on the seabed in the Pacific Ocean. It is only the second vessel sunk during the battle to have been found.
Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia and Hong Kong ban poultry imports from the Australian state of Victoria while Japan bans imports from the whole of Australia following an outbreak of a low pathogenic form of the avian influenza (separate from the potentially deadly H5N1 strain).
