A 10-year-old girl receives what is believed to be the world's first stem cell assisted vein transplant.

At the International Society for Stem Cell Research's annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, developmental biologist Magdalena Żernicka-Goetz reveals that American and British researchers have generated the world's first synthetic human embryo-like structures using stem cells. Żernicka-Goetz suggests that the findings could provide insights into the causes of miscarriages.

In an act of cooperation that is rare in recent years, Iran releases Princeton PhD candidate Wang Xiyue while the United States releases stem cell researcher Massoud Soleimani in a prisoner exchange. Both U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif thank the Swiss government for facilitating the swap.

Scientists report, in the AHA journal "Stroke", that a small trial of stroke victims showed significant improvement following injection of stem cells directly into their brains. The study had been designed just to test whether the highly experimental therapy was safe. Such treatments were available in China for many years but treatment results were very inconclusive.
