The United Nations announce that seven MONUSCO peacekeepers were killed in clashes with militia yesterday in Beni, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Ukraine withdraws its 250 troops from the United Nations peacekeeping force MONUSCO in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A Ukrainian Air Force aviation unit also withdraws its eight helicopters from the mission, which made up a third of the UN's fleet.
Protestors storm the MONUSCO headquarters in Beni, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and set UN vehicles on fire in anger at the peacekeepers' failure to stop the Allied Democratic Forces insurgency. Congolese security forces fire at the crowd to disperse them, killing at least two.
Suspected Allied Democratic Forces militants in North Kivu, DR Congo, kill at least 15 United Nations peacekeepers, mostly Tanzanian, and five Congolese soldiers, and wound 53 other people. An unknown number of the rebels are killed. Over 90 peacekeepers have been killed since the mission started in 1999.
