Italy suspends the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in people under the age of 60 nationwide following the death of an 18-year-old girl yesterday and reports of other young people who have been hospitalized in critical condition after receiving their first dose of the vaccine. The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines will be used for the vaccination of people under the age of 60, including for people who already received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Italy registers a record 34,505 new cases over the past 24 hours, pushing the cumulative case total to 824,879. In addition, the country reports 445 deaths, the highest number in a single day since May 2 and pushing the death toll to 40,192, becoming the sixth country to register more than 40,000 deaths.

In Italy, the military is deployed to the city of Bergamo, Lombardy, the Italian city worst hit by COVID-19, to collect and transport the bodies of dead residents to crematoriums in other cities, as Bergamo’s authorities say their facilities can no longer process the large number of fatalities. The city's mayor Giorgio Gori says the true number of dead could be much higher than what's been reported.
