Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed admits for the first time that Eritrean troops entered Ethiopia's Tigray Region and fought the rebel Tigray People's Liberation Front, and that they may have been involved in war crimes. Abiy says that Eritrean forces promised to leave the region as soon as Ethiopia's military was able to "control the border".

Ethiopian National Defense Force troops open fire on United Nations staffers who were trying to reach areas where "they were not supposed to go" near Sheraro in the Tigray Region, according to senior Ethiopian government official Redwan Hussein. There are no reported casualties. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric says the reports are "alarming".

Federal forces say that they have seized the town of Wukro in Ethiopia's Tigray Region as they advance on the region's capital Mekelle. Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) leader Debretsion Gebremichael confirms that government forces had started an operation to capture Mekelle, saying his forces are "ready to die in defence of our right to administer our region".

Federal troops capture the city of Adigrat near the Eritrean border in Ethiopia's Tigray Region. Ethiopian government forces are now within 116 km (72 miles) of the heavily defended Tigrayan capital Mekelle. The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) says Adigrat has experienced "heavy bombardment", but does not confirm the loss of the city.

Explosions are reported in the Eritrean capital Asmara amid reports of a missile attack from Tigray, Ethiopia. The Eritrean government confirms missiles were launched at the capital but said that they missed and instead landed in the countryside. The attack comes just hours after the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) threatened to target Eritrea.

Citizens in Tigray Region, Ethiopia begin casting their votes for a local election, defying the central government and increasing political tensions. Tigray's authorities object the postponement of the August general election and the time of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in office, and say that any intervention by the government would amount to a "declaration of war".
