Scientists identify and name a new penguin species, the southeastern gentoo penguin ("Pygoscelis kerguelensis"), in the Kerguelen Islands near Antarctica. Previously classfied as a standard gentoo penguin due to its nearly identical appearance, it is now differentiated through genetic sequencing.
