Three former Labour Party MPs – David Chaytor, Elliot Morley and Jim Devine – face criminal charges over their expenses win the right to have their legal fees paid for by the taxpayer.
The European Parliament votes 621–49 to pass the 2020 Brexit agreement, making today the last day Britain will be represented in the EU Parliament. MEP and Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage applauds its passage by saying "we'd be better off out", while UK Labour MEP Judith Kirton-Darling tearfully states it "attacks the very foundation of our identity".
The Labour Party wins the three by-elections held in the United Kingdom on Thursday. Steve Reed is elected in Croydon North, Andy McDonald in Middlesbrough and Sarah Champion in Rotherham. The UK Independence Party achieve second place in Middlesbrough and Rotherham, beating the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.
Former British Labour MP Eric Illsley is jailed for 12 months for dishonestly claiming parliamentary expenses. The sentence comes on the same day that Jim Devine, another former Labour MP, is convicted of dishonestly claiming £8,385 of expenses by using false invoices for cleaning and printing work.
