A woman is sentenced to six months imprisonment in Mauritania for keeping two children in slave-like conditions.
The United States says it is "deeply concerned" about abuses by state security forces in the Sahel and threatens to cut aid to the G5 nations that form a coalition in the area – Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Chad – if those issues are not addressed. The U.S. also welcomes a summit to be held between the G5 nations and France and Spain.
Voters in Mauritania head to the polls to elect a new president. The election would be the country's first democratic transition of power, as incumbent president Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz prepares to step down after having served two terms.
Mauritania extradites former Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi, who was arrested in the capital Nouakchott in March after fleeing Libya during the civil war in 2011. The United States insist on a fair trial for the suspect, a "milestone in (Libya's) democratic transition".
